Daniel's Preserve @ Spanish Creek

Daniels Preserve at Spanish Creek is located at 18500 Persimmon Ridge Road, Alva, Florida in northeast Lee County within Section 15, Township 43 South, Range 27 East. The Preserve is located less than one mile north of Alva Elementary and Middle Schools and the Alva Community Center. It is approximately 243 acres that has historically been used by the Daniels family for cattle grazing. It is surrounded by rural residential, agricultural and conservation lands. The site is also approximately 1 mile north of the Caloosahatchee River and 1 mile southeast of Babcock Ranch.

 

The 240 acre Preserve consists of 21 plant communities and includes the headwaters of Spanish Creek. The dominant plant communities are pine flatwoods, wetlands forested mixed and pine-mesic oak.

Restoration Activites:

Control of Cogon grass on 0.5 acres.  Cogon grass (Imperata cylindrica) is an exotic invasive grass that will spread and out compete other plants if not controlled.  Methodology used here included weed whacking and a follow up treatment with herbicide. Additional restoration projects include removal of other exotic plant species, recountouring the borrow pits and rehydration of Spanish Creek and the surrounding wetlands.

Future plans (funding dependant) for this Preserve inculde approx. one mile of marked trails, an observation deck/fishing pier, educational signage and a small area of parking.
