Bay Oaks Recreation Center is operated by the Town of Ft. Myers Beach. The center is located on Estero Island within the incorporated limits. This community based recreation center is heavily used by local children for a variety of after school, recreational & athletic activities. Teenagers from the surrounding middle and high schools spend much of their leisure hours in this constructive environment. Bay Oaks features a climate controlled gymnasium with two full sized basketball courts. The facility is also home for the Bay Oaks Social Seniors or B.O.S.S. This is a relatively new program and has been a great success. It has grown from a handful of members to well over 300.

Year round residents, as well as seasonal guests, and visitors enjoy many hours playing in this free facility. Whether the activity is weightlifting, tennis, basketball, ping pong, etc, Bay Oaks has something for all ages and offers a variety of programs and events.

Bay Oaks Recreation Center opened it doors to the residents of Lee County on October 23, 1986, thanks to a handful of local residents who had the vision of a Beach Recreation Center as far back as the early 1960's. The land that Bay Oaks Park and Recreation Center, sits on today was once owned by Dr. W.B. Winkler. He also owned much of the surrounding lands, where today you find the Matanzas Pass Preserve, the Estero Island Historic Cottages and Beach Elementary School. Dr. Winkler willed the property to his lifelong housekeeper, Martha Redd, who in turn sold the land that was later purchased by Lee County.

During construction of the 17,694 sq. ft. multi-purpose recreation center the project suffered a number of problems. After all the issues were finally resolved the result was a beautiful recreational facility that included 2 full size basketball/volleyball courts, a weight room, a meeting room, 2 activities rooms, 4 outdoor tennis courts, basketball court, 2 athletic fields, a picnic area and a playground.

In 1998 Lee County entered into an agreement with the newly formed Town of Fort Myers Beach. Under the inter-local agreement Lee County Parks & Recreation continued to run and operate Bay Oaks Recreational Complex while the Town of Fort Myers Beach supplied half of the funding for its operational costs. As part of the agreement an 8 person advisory board was formed (4 members appointed by the County Commissioners and 4 members appointed by the Town Council). This advisory board meets monthly to give community input and to make staff and program recommendations.

As of October 1st, 2009 Bay Oaks Recreation Center is now operated by the Town of Ft. Myers Beach.
