These very shy creatures are not commonly seen in the Six Mile Cypress Slough. Their streaky brown plumage allows them to blend in very well with their surroundings.

When alarmed, American bitterns will stretch their necks and beaks up to the sky to blend in with the vegetation and even sway with the wind to imitate the reeds!
