American coots, also known as mud hens, are jet black with a white bill and red eyes. Notice its lobed toes, which are used for swimming and walking on muddy shores. They look just like leaves!

Young coots escape danger by swimming underwater and grasping a stem with their bills, anchoring themselves to the bottom until the danger has passed.
