Anhinga
|
This anhinga is drying its wings after a swim. Besides “snakebirds,” anhingas are also commonly called “piano birds,” because during breeding season the feathers on their wings resemble piano keys. Sunning not only dries the anhinga’s wings but also helps to raise their low metabolism. It is a misconception that anhingas do not have an oil gland, but it can be seen in this photo at the base of its tail. |
