Northern cardinals are year-round residents to the Six Mile Cypress Slough. Although you can't tell in this picture, northern cardinals have pointed crests on their heads. The cardinal's strong beak is designed for crushing berries and seeds.

The cardinal in the picture is a male; females are brown with yellow beaks, camouflaged to blend in while sitting in their nests.
