This bird is in its breeding plumage (notice the plumes coming from its head, neck and back).

The heron's long neck is used for striking for fish. Although they extend their necks when taking off to fly, they quickly pull them into an 'S' shape against their bodies.

The great blue heron can have a wingspan of up to 6 feet!
