Immature night herons are difficult to find because they are very well camouflaged and move slowly.

When they're young, it's hard to tell whether an immature night heron is a black-crowned or a yellow-crowned night heron. The surest way to tell is to notice the adults surrounding the young bird, as the two species look different in their adulthood.
