Yellow Garden Orbweaver

Yellow Garden Orbweavers are fairly large spiders that are more visible in the Slough in the fall. These spiders weave a characteristic zipper in their webs, called a stabilimentum. According to Florida's Fabulous Spiders, 2001, there are four theories on the purpose of the stabilimentum:
1. To make the web more visibile so birds don't fly into it
2. To help stabilize the web
3. To reflect UV light and attract insects
4. To hide the spider so insects don't see it on the web, thereby helping the spider catch prey
